Japan Offers to Enrich Uranium for Iran, Gets No Response: Report

Japan has made an offer to enrich uranium for Iran to let it access to nuclear power while dispelling international fears that Tehran might be seeking an atomic weapon, reported AFP quoting the Nikkei business daily report.

However, Iran has not given any concrete answer so far but Iran’s parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani and Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada are expected to discuss the issue in Tokyo on Wednesday, report said.

It may be mentioned that the US and the West think that Tehran is enriching uranium to make nuclear weapons under cover of its civilian energy programme, a charge which Iran has denied all through.

According to the Nikkei daily report which didn’t cite sources, the proposal for Japan to enrich uranium for Iran was floated in December, with US approval, when Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili visited Tokyo, report said.

It may be mentioned that Japan, the only country to have been attacked with atomic bombs, has strongly supported efforts for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
