It’s Decision Time for Lib Dems over their Support to Form Govt: Cameron

Conservative leader David Cameron has said that it is ‘decision time for the Liberal Democrats’ over their support to either of the two party for formation of the government, said media reports.

Cameron, who party emerged as the single largest party but were still short of a majority, said that he hoped Lib Dems would make the right decision, said reports.

His statement came following days of talks between the Tories and Lib Dems, after the UK election resulted in a hung parliament.

In the morning, Cameron said that paramount concern since Friday was for ‘strong, stable government that is in the national interest’ and his party had made a ‘very reasonable’ offer to the Lib Dems to deliver it, said reports.

He said that his parliamentarians put aside party interest in favour of the national interest – after they approved a referendum on the voting system, a reform the Conservatives have always opposed, reports said.

“It’s now, I believe, decision time, decision time for the Liberal Democrats and I hope they will make the right decision to give this country the strong, stable government that it badly needs and badly needs quickly,” he was quoted as saying.

Labour and the Tories are both trying to woo the Lib Dems with promises on electoral reform as the battle to form a new government reaches its critical phase.

On Monday, the Lib Dems formally opened talks with Labour about a rival deal.

Gordon Brown announced the Lib Dem-Labour talks in the same Downing Street statement in which he said he would resign as Labour leader by September.

Labour said if the Lib Dems supported them they would put the Alternative Vote system into law and then hold a referendum asking voters if they want a proportional representation voting system – a key issue for the Lib Dems.

In the meanwhile, the Conservatives upped their offer on Monday evening to the Lib Dems to a promise of a referendum on changing the voting system to the Alternative Vote system.
