Indian fisherman killed by Sri Lankan Navy

On Saturday night a fisherman from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu was killed allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.

On Sunday Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee assured Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that the Centre would take up the issue with the Sri Lankan authorities, Taking serious view towards the “killing of two Tamil fishermen in 10 days” by the Sri Lankan Navy.

The Chief Minister drew Mr. Mukherjee’s attention to the continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen when the latter called on him on Sunday morning. “Through the Ministry of External Affairs, I will take it up with the Sri Lankan authorities,” Mr. Mukherjee told reporters at Mr. Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence.

Stressing that India had good relationship with Sri Lanka, Mr. Mukherjee said if the fishermen had done anything wrong they could have been arrested and due process could have been followed.

A 28-year old fisherman Jayakumar from Pushpavanam fishing hamlet in Vedaranyam on Saturday night was allegedly killed by the Sri Lankan Navy. He had gone for fishing with two other fishermen.

On Sunday the body was handed over to his family.

Also on January 13, a fisherman named Veerapandian from Nagapattinam, was shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy.
However the Sri Lanka denied involvement of its forces in the incident.

The Chief Minister announced to give five lakh rupees to the family of the latest victim.
