Gunmen Kill 17, Injure 18 Others in Mexico

As many as 17 people were killed and 18 others injured as a group of armed miscreants opened fire at people attending a party, said media reports citing officials.

Police said that gunmen arrived in a car and began firing without saying a word, reports said.

Most of the victims were aged between 20 and 30.

Officials feared the death toll could rise because some of the injured were in critical condition, said reports.

Over 120 cartridges were found by police at the scene, which was on the outskirts of the city in Coahuila state, bordering Texas, reports said.

Officials were not immediately able to give a motive for the attack, which they said appeared drug-related, said reports.

The region around Torreon is a transit point along smuggling routes to the United States.

Thousands of people have been killed in drug-related violence across Mexico over the past four years.
