Eve-election Opinion Polls: Conservatives Leading, May Not Gain Majority

As nearly 50000 polling stations open in Britain’s general elections, there’s more uncertainty about who would emerge as the prime minister, said media reports.

According to a string of eve-election opinion polls, the Conservatives are leading but may not be able to reach the level of support they need to claim an overall majority in the House of Commons, reports said.

A strong campaign performance by the Liberal Democrats is the reason that may prevent the Conservatives to gain an outright majority, said reports.

Besides, first-past-the-post voting system of Britain is further complicating matters, with Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour party still having a chance of winning the most seats even if they come third in the national vote, reports said.

Opinion polls had the Conservatives comfortably ahead on about 35 per cent, against Labour on 28 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on 27 per cent, said reports.

When pollster Ipsos Mori asked voters about their intentions on the eve of the election, it was shocked to find that four in 10 people still have not made up their minds, reports said.

With so many voters still undecided, the keys to 10 Downing Street are still within the grip of both Labour and the Conservatives.
