Earthquake in Christchurch

WELLINGTON: A 5.8 magnitude Earthquake hits the New Zealand’s South Island city of Christchurch on Friday, said authorities.

The quake struck at 1.58 p.m., 20 km northeast of Lyttelton and 8 km deep, said the New Zealand government geological agency GNS Sciences.

The earthquake lasted for about 20 seconds and was followed by aftershocks.

Household things were broken and people ran out of buildings. Also the Christchurch airport, supermarkets and shopping malls have been evacuated.

Some phone networks were down and power is out in Christchurch suburb of New Brighton after the shocks.

A police spokeswoman said she did not know whether there were any reports of damage or injuries so far, but added the phones were really busy.

Feb 22 a 6.3 magnitude quake shooked Christchurch, killing 165 people.
