Deposed Kyrgyz Prez on Run Again, from Kazakhstan to Secret Location

Four days after he left his country to neighbouring Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan’s deposed president Kurmanbek Bakiyev is once again fleeing, to a secret location this time, reported CNN.

“He (Bakiev) left on Sunday. I can’t say where he went,” Ilyas Omarov, a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry, was quoted as saying.

Omarov said that Kazakhstan government helped Bakiyev fly out of Kyrgyzstan last Thursday to the southern Kazakhstan town of Taraz, said report.

“We organized a special plane for him to ensure his security,” Omarov, describing last Thursday’s flight, was quoted a saying. “Certain measures were taken to prevent civil war or any escalation.”

It may be mentioned that Bakiyev was dethroned earlier this month following a day of bloody clashes between police and protesters in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek in which scores of people were killed.

However, Kyrgyzstan continues to be far from stable. Bakiyev’s supporters took over an administrative building and television station in the deposed president’s ancestral home town of Jalalabad over the weekend.

Washington and Moscow, which both maintain airbases in Kyrgyzstan, reached out to the interim government in Bishkek. Besides, Kyrgyzstan’s larger, oil- and gas-rich neighbour Kazakhstan is also taking an active role, engaging with the new interim government.

Report said that Bakiyev’s current whereabouts could be another former Soviet republic: Belarus.

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has publicly offered Bakyiev sanctuary in his country.
