Campaign in final hours: France Elections

PARIS: The election in France seems to be very close contest between President Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist challenger Francois Hollande.

The position of other candidate are Marine Le Pen third, with radical leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon close behind her, and centrist Francois Bayrou likely to come fifth.

The Opinion polls suggest that Socialist challenger Francois Hollande will win the two-round contest, ending 17 years of conservative dominance. The opinions polls are also saying that quarter of voters have yet to make up their minds.

Nicolas Sarkozy is will be holding election meeting in the Cote d’Azur city of Nice while Francois Hollande is to appear in the Ardennes town of Charleville-Mezieres, in the east.

Both the candidates have focused on the economy as a main issue.”The important thing is to put our public finances in order,” said Francois Hollande.”They’ve been turned completely upside down these past years due to irresponsible fiscal policy and the crisis.”

Both candidates are also carrying personal attack on one another.”For 10 years he was head of the Socialist Party,” Sarkozy told RTL. “He wasn’t the head of very much. That’s the truth.”

“Europe is convalescent. That’s a reality. We can’t afford any mistakes. The minute we ease up on cutting spending, reducing the deficit, reducing the debt, France will share the fate of Spain.”
