Court to Announce Verdict in Ruchika Case on May 25

A local court in Chandigarh hearing pleas of former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore challenging his conviction in Ruchika Girhotra molestation case has deferred the verdict till May 25, said media reports.

“The matter has been deferred to May 25. Since it is a lengthy case, the judge wanted some time to pronounce the verdict,” Pankaj Bharadwaj, the Girhotras’ lawyer, was quoted as saying.

Ruchika’s family and the CBI have appealed for enhancing the jail term of Rathore, who was awarded six-month term for molesting the teenage on December 21, 2009.

Ruchika, who was molested by Rathore on August 12, 1990, later committed suicide in 1993, after Rathore allegedly used his position in the police force to scuttle all enquiries against him.

It was only after the Punjab and Haryana High Court intervened in 1998 that a CBI inquiry was ordered.

On December 21, 2009, the CBI trial court finally convicted Rathore, but sentenced him to just six months in prison which left Ruchika’s family deeply disappointed.
