Brazil Prez Condemns Additional UN Sanctions against Iran

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has condemned more sanctions against Iran currently under discussion by the UN Security Council, said media reports.

The UNSC assembled in New York this week to hold discussions on a draft resolution imposing a new set of sanctions on the Islamic republic, accused by the West of trying to build nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian energy programme, reports said.

“Some people don’t want Iran to agree to the proposal which they had put forward before… they don’t like it anymore,” the president was quoted as saying.

Iran, Turkey and Brazil on Monday reached a trilateral agreement on uranium exchange, setting out terms under which Iran will send 1.2 tonnes of its low-enriched uranium to get 120 kg of 20 percent enriched uranium fuel.

The swap will be carried out all through the year on Turkey’s territory.

Lula da Silva lauded the deal as ‘remarkable progress’, said reports.

“The truth is that Iran, which has been portrayed as an evil unwilling to negotiate, came to the negotiating table,” he was quoted as saying.
