‘Highly Precarious’ Security Situation after Sinking of Warship by North Korea: Hillary

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that sinking of a South Korean warship by North Korea has caused a ‘highly precarious’ security situation in the region and that Obama Administration is working to discourage any escalation of tension capable of a conflict, said media reports.

Talking to reporters in Beijing, she said that all neighbours of North Korea, its chief ally China included, fathomed the gravity of the issue and wanted to ‘contain’ it, reports said.

Earlier, South Korea said that it would raise the sinking of the ship by North Korea in March in US Security Council for possible action, said reports.

Clinton didn’t specify if any action would include fresh sanctions against North Korea but said that she was in intense consultation with China and other countries about the next move, reports said.

“We are working hard to avoid an escalation of belligerence and provocation,” Clinton was quoted as saying. “This is a highly precarious situation that the North Koreans have caused in the region.”

She said that North Korea must get the message that ‘we are not simply resuming business as usual’, said reports.

“The US will work with other nations to see that North Korea feels the consequences of its actions and changes its behavior to avoid ‘the kind of escalation that would be very regrettable’,” she was quoted as saying.
