Japan, China to Establish Hotline between Prime Ministers

China and Japan has agreed to re-establish a hotline between the prime minister’s office of the two countries, said media reports.

The move came during talks between Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao who is presently on a visit to Japan, second since 2007.

In addition, the two prime ministers agreed to launch negotiations on implementing principled consensus on the East China Sea issue, speed up the establishment of a maritime communication mechanism between defense departments of the two sides, and negotiate and sign an agreement on maritime rescue at an early date, reports said.

Hatoyama also hosted a welcome ceremony for Jiabao before their talks.

The two leaders also signed four memorandums of understanding including one on food safety, reports said.

Premier Jiabao arrived in Tokyo on Sunday for a three-day official visit. Japan is the second leg of his four-nation Asian tour, which has taken him to South Korea and also includes Mongolia and Myanmar.
