Migrant worker targeted in TN, fear still among workers

Fear stirred among Hindi-speaking migrant workers in Tamil Nadu and a political war across states is not going to end soon despite of immediate action by state government of damage control.

Taking charge and in a bid to gain political mileage BJP raised allegations of attacks on migrant workers due to which it has been accused of using false claims of violence against North Indian migrant workers to target the ruling parties in Tamil Nadu and Bihar.

Several videos on social media showing migrant workers, especially from Bihar, being attacked and even killed in Tamil Nadu were pointed out as false by police.

However, influenced by the videos, some migrant workers are returning home out of fear, affecting economic activities in parts of Tamil Nadu, according to a few industry leaders.

On March 4, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 4 condemned the rumours and said workers are safe in the state. The same day, the Tamil Nadu police booked BJP’s Uttar Pradesh spokesperson Prashant Patel Umrao and the editor of Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar for spreading false information.

Industries across Tamil Nadu, which rely heavily on migrant workers, have hit the panic button as a section of their workers stayed away from work after seeing fake videos and reports on migrant workers being attacked in the State.
