Burhanuddin Rabbani killed in Afghanistan
KABUL: Former President of Afghanistan Burhanuddin Rabbani had been meeting Taliban commanders when he died.
On Tuesday hundreds of Afghans have gathered in Kabul to mourn High Peace Council chief Burhanuddin Rabbani and protest at his killing by a suicide bomber.
Streets of Kabul were sealed off around Rabbani’s home, where ex-colleagues arrived to pay respects.
President Hamid Karzai has cut short his visit to the UN in New York to return to Afghanistan.
There was heavy security in Kabul’s diplomatic zone, where Rabbani’s house is located, with police searching all those arriving.
In protest and paying tribute several hundred people, many wearing black headbands, carried pictures of Rabbani and chanted Koran verses.
