Protest in Srinagar after the killing of a Madarsa teacher

SRINAGAR: On Monday protest and clashes take place with police at Rafiabad in Baramulla district after killing of a 30 year old man by unidentified persons. At least four people were injured when Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police used batons and fired teargas to distract the crowd.

A local Madarsa teacher Muhammad Ashraf Lone of Chatipora of Rafiabad was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Hail-Jageer in Kreeri on Sunday evening. Reportedly he gone missing on Thursday.

According to reports massive demonstrations were held at Chatipora and its adjoining villages in Rafiabad after the news of the killing of Ashraf spread Monday morning. The protesters carried the body of Ashraf in a procession and staged a sit-in on the Sopore- Ladura link road, said police.

“We want freedom,” “Islam Zindabad,” were the slogans raised by the angry protesters demanding the identification and punishment for the people involved in the killing.

As a police team from Sopore reached the spot, angry protesters hurled stones on them. Later additional reinforcements rushed to control the protests.

The forces, according to reports, fired tear smoke shells after they failed to disperse the protesters with cane charge. At least four people, the reports said.

However, Superintendent of Police Altaf Ahmad, Sopore, said there were no reports of injuries among the civilians and the forces. He said the protesters later on buried the dead body of Muhammad Ashraf Lone and everything was under control in north Kashmir.
