Woman IFS Officer Spying for Pak Taken into Custody

For allegedly spying and passing on strategic secret information to Pakistan, a woman Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer has been taken into custody, said media reports.

Madhuri Gupta, 53, posted at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, is a second secretary (press information) of the IFS B service.

Quoting unnamed sources reports said that colleagues and the mission grew suspicious of Gupta about eight to nine months ago leading to investigations both by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

Gupta, a promotee officer of Ministry of External Affairs, was arrested in New Delhi four days ago after she was summoned on the pretext of discussions on the current SAARC summit meeting held in Thimpu, Bhutan, said reports citing sources.

Now the government is probing whether others were also involved in spying, reports said.

She is alleged to have kept in touch with Pakistan’s secret ISI for nearly 2 years now, said reports.

After being called to Delhi, she allegedly admitted being in touch with Pakistan agency, reports said.

She was taken into custody by Delhi police and sent to jail on charges of espionage, said reports.

Home Secretary GK Pillai said that Gupta had been passing information to Pakistani agencies. “She has been arrested,” he said.

Reports said that She is alleged to have been taking information from the RAW station head in Islamabad, which was passed to the ISI, reports said.

According to reports, even Sharma’s role has come under scanner for allegedly passing information to Gupta though it is still not known if he knew her designs, said reports.

Gupta, who was arrested upon her arrival four days ago, was produced again before a court yesterday which has remanded her to further police custody of another five days.
