MIUI 11: Xiaomi to bring new icons, power saving mode, and more: Report

Even as Xiaomi is in the midst of the rollout of its latest mobile operating system, MIUI 10, the Chinese smartphone maker has already started work on the upcoming version of the OS — the MIUI 11.

The upcoming version of Xiaomi’s take on the Android operating system is being rumoured to bring with it some interesting changes — some of which have even been teased by the company. According to GizmoChina, Liu Ming, the product manager and design director in charge of MIUI 11 met journalists yesterday and in a Q&A session reportedly disclosed new features that will be added to the new version of the software.

The report reveals that one of the main changes that MIUI 11 will bring with it is a brand new set of system icons. The company says that these new icons for the operating system have been “redesigned from the ground up and will have an unified design.”

Another big feature coming to MIUI is an ultimate power saving mode, which when turned on will disable all functions on the phone except for calls and messages. This mode will focus so aggressively on power saving that all colors will be turned off and the UI will switch to a monochrome mode to conserve power. However, Xiaomi will give users the chance to make slight customisations to this mode and add certain apps to it if they want.

Other reports suggest that Xiaomi has also said that it will optimise the status bar so that more apps support the dark mode, which has been made available as a system-wide implementation.

Earlier, Xiaomi has also revealed that the upcoming software will get an improved notifications pane, and also the ability to lock and unlock apps through face or fingerprint scanners. MIUI 11 will also get new Dolby sound effects, and support for foldable devices.
