Corresponding Action if Obama Meets Dalai, Warns China

Warning US President Barack Obama, China has said that if he meets Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, it will harm ties between the two countries, reported BBC.

“There would be corresponding action if the meeting went ahead,” Chinese Communist Party official Zhu Weiqun was quoted as saying.

Recently, the White House has hinted at Barack Obama intending to meet the head of Tibetans in exile.

Zhu’s statement came in the wake of talks between China and the Dalai Lama’s representatives in China. There was little progress in the talks, as both sides went on to reiterate stands that were ‘sharply divided’.

Zhu dwelt at length about China’s opinion on a possible meeting between Obama and the Dalai.

“It will seriously undermine the foundations of Sino-US political relations,” he was quoted as saying.

He also said that China would retaliate in that case, said report.

“If (the meeting) does happen we will take corresponding action to make relevant countries see their mistakes,” he was quoted as saying.

These comments come straight after a disagreement between China and the US about the sale of American military equipment worth $6.4bn to Taiwan, an island China considers its own.
