CBI to arrest Kalmadi

NEW DELHI: CWG Organising Committee’s former chairman Suresh Kalmadi for his alleged involvement in irregularities related to the CWG Games now expected to be soon arrested by CBI.

CBI said, “We will arrest Kalmadi sometime next week in the CWG corruption case.” He added, “The arrest of Kalmadi could get expedited due to political factors.” He added, “The DMK has been complaining at various levels that the CBI was prompt in arresting former telecom minister A Raja, but is dragging its feet in the case of Kalmadi… We are under pressure.”

The source added, “We have evidence to establish Kalmadi’s role in several irregularities related to the CWG, including favouring supplier firms which had quoted inflated rates.”

Sources said, Kalmadi’s role has been under the agency’s scanner in cases related to the Queens Baton Relay (QBR), for which it had lodged two FIRs on November 15 last year. The FIR, which did not name Kalmadi, had mentioned several OC officials, the London-based private firm AM Films, and the company’s director and others.

According to the CBI, the accused OC officials, in conspiracy with London-based private firm, awarded the work of installation of video screens at the venue of QBR at inflated rates. The contract was given to AM Films on the basis of fake quotations and without following the standard procedures, the source said.
