Security Beefed up at Mao Checkgate to Arrest Muivah as He Enters Manipur

Security has been tightened at Mao checkgate on the Manipur-Nagaland border for taking into custody separatist leader and NSCN (IM) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah the moment he entered Manipur to reach his native village, reported PTI.

Life has been crippled across the state as a 48-hour general strike begins to protest against the visit, report said.

According to official reports, Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh has informed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram after three persons were killed in stampede at the Mao gate on the Nagaland side, report said.

The stampede had resulted from the bursting of tear gas shells by the Manipur police yesterday.

On the other hand, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio in a statement has held the Ibobi Singh government ‘solely responsible’ for the tense situation arising out of Muivah’s proposed visit to Somdal, his village in Ukhrul district.
