There’re Misgivings about Incineration of Union Carbide’s Waste: Chouhan

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has informed Union Minister of State for Environment Jairam Ramesh that there are misgivings among the local people about incineration of Union Carbide’s waste at Pithampur, said an official release.

He urged Ramesh that the process of incinerating this waste should not be set in motion until the local people are satisfied about safety measures.

Ramesh had called on Chouhan at his residence during his visit to Bhopal and assured that the issue would be considered.

Chouhan also urged Ramesh to take up the process of clearance to Maheshwar and other pending projects at the earliest.

He said that maintaining a balance between development and environmental conservation is necessary for improving people’s standard of living.

Ramesh assured that he would undertake fresh review of Maheshwar project’s case and that the old highway passing through Pench sanctuary would not be closed.

Chouhan said that people living near National Parks and sanctuaries should be made partners in the conservation of wildlife and cooperation of those forest dwellers, who earn a living by hunting animals, can also be taken in this work by ensuring their economic rehabilitation.

He described Rewa as best place for establishing a procreation centre of white tigers. He said that as per traditions, white tiger is related to Rewa.

Ramesh said that he has talked to the Gujarat government in connection with the Central scheme about lions at Kuno sanctuary in Sheopur district.

The Gujarat government is not ready to provide lions for it.

Ramesh expressed happiness over the state government’s move to shift tigers to Panna National Park and then undertaking the successful experiment of breeding.

He urged Chouhan to give active participation in ‘National Mission for Green India’ campaign.

Chouhan told him that a large-scale plantation programme is being undertaken in Madhya Pradesh under ‘Haryali Mahotsav’.

He also assured to give his utmost cooperation to the National Mission for greenery.
