Prohibitory Orders around Bhopal Court, Gas Tragedy Verdict Today

Bhopal  —  A local court Monday will deliver its verdict on the 1984 Bhopal tragedy when a toxic gas, leaking from a factory owned by the Indian subsidiary of US multinational Union Carbide Corporation, killed thousands of people while an unspecified number continues to live with its after effects to this day, say reports.

Anticipating trouble, the District Administration has issued prohibitory orders restricting the gathering of four or more people in the vicinity of the Court premises.

“The prohibitory orders would be in force from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday in a one kilometre radius around the district court to avoid any untoward incident,” Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Rajneesh Shrivastava was quoted as saying by IANS news agency.

On the night of Dec 2-3, 1984 tonnes of  methyl iso-cyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the now defunct factory complex that stands in the heart of the city in a blatant violation of norms.

Over three thousand people were instantly killed by the poisonous gas within hours while scores of others are still living with the physical and emotional scars of what is notoriously referred to as the worst industrial disaster known to humanity.

Rights groups working for the welfare of the victims however claim that the death toll to be a lot higher saying over 15000 died of complications within weeks of the disaster.

Amid calls for capital punishment for those responsible for those responsible for the tragedy, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Mohan P Tiwari will in all likelihood deliver the verdict in the case today.
