Quick decision in Swiss woman’s gangrape

Bhopal: Special Judge of Datia Shri Jitendra Kumar Sharma completed hearing in gangrape case of Swiss woman within 4 months after presentation of chargesheet in the court and awarded life sentence and Rs. 10 thousand fine each to all 6 convicts.

Life imprisonment and fine of Rs. 10 thousand each has been awarded to accused Rampro (23), Brajesh alias Gaja (24), Bhoota (30), Rishi alias Baba (20), Vishnu (25) and Nitin (22) on the charge of gangraping a Swiss woman tourist, beating her husband and committing dacoity near village Jhadiya in Datia district on March 15. Three years’ imprisonment and fine of Rs. 500 each was also awarded separately to accused Rampro under Arms Act.
Remarkable aspect of this decision is that the Swiss tourist couple had left India only after 10 days of the incident. The couple was so afraid after the incident that they did not to wish to record their statements in Datia court. On this, they were contacted through Swiss embassy at Chanakyapuri in New Delhi. For identification of accused, they were brought to NIC room at Datia and were identified through video-conferencing by the victims from Swiss embassy. DNA reports of the accused and victim were also found positive. Looted goods were also recovered from the accused. Crime was established through their fingerprints and other evidences also.
It is noteworthy that conviction rate of cases of crimes against women has increased in Madhya Pradesh. Till the year 2000 , 12.70 percent such crimes in the country used to be committed in Madhya Pradesh alone. This rate was brought down to 7.30 percent by the year 2011. Similarly, 22.70 percent of total crimes in the country were committed in Madhya Pradesh, which have reduced to 14 percent now. Till the year 2000, Madhya Pradesh used to witness 5.80 percent cases of abduction, which has come down to 3.10 percent now. Cases of domestic violence by husband and his relatives were 6.8 percent in the country in the year 2000, which has reduced to 3.80 percent now. Of the total cases of harassment of women in the country in year 2000, 25.90 percent were committed in the state, which have come down to 15.50 now.
During last 7-8 months, chargesheet was presented in court for rape of a girl on January 11, 2013 and the court awarded death sentence to the convict on February 5. In case of rape of a minor in Rajgarh district, the court announced its decision on the 18th day and within 12 working days after presentation of chargesheet and award life term to the convict. In the case of rape of a minor in Khandwa district, the court announced decision on the 9th day after presentation of chargesheet and awarded 10-year imprisonment to the accused. In connection with sexual crime in Bhind district, chargesheet was presented on January 31 and the court announced its decision on February 15. Quick action was also taken in cases of crimes against women in Bhopal and Betul districts also.
