People should appreciate that I ordered a probe against my own party colleague: Omar

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir chief min ister Omar Abdullah today lashed out at opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for levelling allegations on him over the death of Syed Muhammad Yusuf, a worker of his National Conference party.

Breaking his silence on the issue he said, “My silence is being used against me. Allegations against me and my father in National Conference worker’s death are baseless and false.”

Speaking to reporters he said, “People should appreciate that I ordered a probe against my own party colleague and handed him over to the police. I have spared no effort to find out how my party worker died.”

He threatened to file a defamation case against those holding him responsible for NC worker’s death. He said,
“My lawyers will respond to such allegations through notice and take the case to its logical conclusion.”

Reacting to this, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said, “PDP is not targetting Omar, he is free to sue me.”

Meanwhile, the state assembly saw some ugly scenes as the PDP demanded Omar Abdullah’s resignation over the alleged custodial death of NC worker last week. An opposition member even hurled a pedestal fan towards the speaker while others uprooted mikes and tore papers.

There was absolute chaos in the assembly as opposition members got up from their seats, demanding the resignations of the chief minister, whom they accused of trying to hush up the mystery surrounding the death of the NC worker, Sayeed Muhammad Yousuf.

Yusuf had allegedly taken Rs 85 lakh and Rs 35 lakh from fellow party workers Mohammad Yousuf Bhat and Abdul
Salam Rishi respectively, promising them berths in the state ministry and legislative council.

The CM had handed over Yusuf to the state crime branch on September 29 for investigations. According to the crime branch, he died the next day at a Srinagar hospital after complaining of nausea and chest pain
