Jairam Ramesh arrived Bhopal for a meeting of BEROC

BHOPAL: Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh arrived to Bhopal to take part in a meeting of the Bhopal Environmental Remediation Oversight Committee. Meeting held at the Gas Rehabilitation Centre.

After the meeting he was heckled by some NGO workers who were demanding that they be allowed to narrate the plight of the survivors of Bhopal gas tragedy.

Sadhana Karnik of Bhopal Gas Peedit Sangarsh Sahayog Samiti Karnik told Ramesh, “You don’t even have the time to visit the places where the survivors of the world’s worst industrial tragedy were drinking underground water polluted by the waste lying in the Carbide factory.”

They are falling sick and contracting serious water-borne diseases, she claimed. Karnik was joined by Balkrishna Namdeo of Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pension Bhogi Sangharsh Morcha in protest.

The NGO representatives demanded the Minister give them a patient hearing regarding the toxic waste lying in the now defunct Union Carbide factory which they claimed was polluting the area.

Ramesh then asked them to come to a meeting organized in july to look into this issue.
