Eurasian countries including SAARC to attend Global Bamboo Summit

Bhopal : Forest Minister Dr. Gaurishankar Shejwar informed about preparations for Global Bamboo Summit to be held at Indore from April 8 to 10 in New Delhi. The Minister gave this information at a policymaking meeting on national bamboo policy chaired by Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari last night. Union Minister of State for Forests and Environment (Independent charge) Prakash Javadekar and Director Madhya Pradesh Bamboo Mission B.B. Singh also attended the meeting.

 

World’s first Global Bamboo Summit at Indore

Dr. Shejwar informed that representatives from SAARC and several European and South Asian countries have consented to attend Global Bamboo Summit to be held at Indore. A committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been constituted to ensure success of the summit.

 

National Bamboo Authority to be constituted

The meeting decided to send a proposal to the Prime Minister to constitute a National Bamboo Authority on the lines of National Road Development Authority. Bamboo activities in India are conducted at present through various departments and ministries. Discussions were held to hand over these activities to Forest Department now.

 

Discussions on other issues

The meeting discussed formulation of national bamboo development policy, constitution of a committee to produce white paper on efforts made by ministries for bamboo development, need for changes in Forest Act to promote bamboo trade, increase of per hectare productivity of bamboo forests in the country from half a tonne to 2 tonnes per annum by year 2020, bamboo farming under Make in India, global level manufacture of tools, implements and machines for bamboo farming, cutting and products, creation of bamboo market, strengthening of rural economy etc.
