Elderly Woman Died of Starvation in Collectorate during Public Hearing: Congress

Deputy leader of Congress legislature party Choudhary Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi has claimed that an elderly woman died allegedly of starvation in the district collectorate during a public hearing, said media reports.

“The elderly woman, Choti Bai Jatav who went to the collectorate to pursue a matter about her social security pension on May 18 died of hunger in the collectorate premises during a public hearing, as she did not have anything to eat,” Chaturvedi was quoted as saying while talking to reporters.

He said that the woman, aged 82, who had drawn pension under Social Security Scheme since 1996, stopped receiving her pension suddenly last year and since then she had been pleading to all concerned authorities to restore her pension, reports said.

Chaturvedi further said that on the day of public hearing too, she had gone to collectorate to pursue the matter, said reports.

He claimed that she collapsed due to weakness even before her turn came, reports said.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital by the officials present there but was declared dead by doctors, said reports.

Chaturvedi alleged that authorities took her body without conducting mandatory post mortem to hide evidence and later handed it over to her relatives, reports said.

He demanded compensation for the kin of the woman and a high-level inquiry into the matter and strict action against the collector and other officials, said report.
