Centre should seek permission of MPCB before UC waste disposal in Maharashtra

JABALPUR (PTI): On Thursday Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the Centre to take the permission of the ‘Maharashtra Pollution Control Board’ before disposing toxic waste from the defunct Union Carbide factory of Bhopal near Nagpur at the DRDO in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra government had opposed the proposed disposal near Nagpur, following local protest.

The direction today was given by the division bench of Justices U C Maheshwari and S Harkoli, on the PIL about the disposal of Carbide waste, filed by noted social worker Alok Pratap Singh.

The Maharashtra government and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board too have filed intervening applications before the Jabalpur bench, but the Court decided that they would be heard later. The court said that MPCB may collect the samples of toxic waste from Bhopal if it wanted to, and posted the case for hearing on August 11.

Earlier, the High Court itself had ordered DRDO and Madhya Pradesh Government to take steps for the disposal of toxic waste at DRDO facility near Nagpur.
