Bhagat Singh had asked to be shot dead instead of being hanged

Bhopal: Governor Shri Ram Naresh Yadav remembered Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh on his martyrdom day.

Governor Shri Yadav said that Shaheed Bhagat Singh who had coined the slogan “Inquilab Zindabad” was against division of the country in the name of religion, caste or creed. He was for country’s independence with human unity.

Governor Shri Yadav said that before being hanged, Bhagat Singh and his companions Sukhdev and Rajguru had written a letter to the then Viceroy saying that they had been sentenced to be hanged on the charge of war against government by a tribunal constituted by him. They said that instead they should be considered as prisoners of war and shot dead. It is noteworthy that Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was hanged at Lahore on March 23, 1931.
