Suspended IPS Abhay Chudasama Sent to Judicial Custody

In Sohrabuddin Sheikh case, the suspended IPS officer Abhay Chudasama has been sent to judicial custody at the end of his seven-day remand, said media reports.

It may be mentioned that Chudasama was arrested for conspiring Sohrabuddin’s killing.

While seeking further remand, the CBI told the court that Chudasama killed Sohrabuddin not for name, fame, and promotions as claimed by CID chargesheet but for extortion, said reports.

Needless to add, the Supreme Court had severely lamented on Gujarat police for its failure to find out the motive in the killings of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kauserbi.

The CBI claimed to have seized unauthorized ammunition from Chudasama’s office and from home of a police inspector of Ahmedabad crime branch, PB Jadeja, reports said.

The material has been sent for forensic examination, said reports adding that the central agency wanted to determine where else Chudasama had hidden arms and ammunition.

The CBI said that the suspended cop was not cooperating and that according to information received by it, he ‘parked’ huge sums of extorted money at different places after he was taken into custody.

Raids at the premise of Jadeja’s brother – KB Jadeja at Surendranagar unearthed Rs 10.98 lakh, hidden in a trunk.

The CBI said that after the cop was arrested, cash and gold ornaments were deposited in a locker in the Muli branch of SBI, reports said.

It also claimed to have found that JM Finance received huge deposits of extorted money in the name of family members of Jadeja and other officers of the crime branch after Chudasama’s arrest, said reports.

However, Chudasama’s counsel thwarted CBI’s demand for further seven-day remand and argued that the investigating agency sought remand on same old grounds, reports said.

He said that CBI did not take the accused anywhere for the purpose of recovery or discovery, and it was not required in further custodial interrogation, said reports.

Hearing the arguments, chief judicial magistrate VB Barot refused further interrogation of Chudasama and sent him to judicial custody.
