Shutdown Affects Normal Life in Srinagar

Shutdown called by separatist against alleged human rights violations and detention of hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani has today affected normal life across Srinagar, said media reports.

Due to the shutdown, markets, educational institutions banks and business remained closed while public transport remained off the roads and less people appeared on their duty in government offices, reports said.

Though roads were deserted, a few autorickshaws and private vehicles plied in the uptown areas, said reports.

Geelani, who favours Jammu and Kashmir’s merger with Pakistan, has been detained under the tough Public Safety Act and lodged in a tourist hut in the high-security Cheshmashahi area.

Over 40 activists of Geelani’s group have been arrested in the last three days here.
