Security Tightened in Kolkata following Terror Alert

After inputs from the Centre of a possible terror strike, security has been tightened in Kolkata, said media reports.

“We have received certain inputs from the Centre and are working on it. We have taken every possible measure to keep the city secure,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Hq) Jawed Shamim was quoted as saying while talking to reporters.

He said that police identified shopping malls and other vulnerable places and officials there were asked to maintain a watch, said reports.

Police said that Bangladesh-based terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) targeted the city and that the IM could be planning blasts or kidnap high profile industrialists, reports said.

They said that the group has base in Kolkata as one of the accused in the 2002 American Centre attack and IM founder Amir Reza Khan belonged to the metro and was still in touch with the city, said reports.

“Our Special Force and anti-terror experts have been deployed and we have urged Kolkatans to be alert,” a senior officer was quoted as saying.

All police stations have been placed on high alert, the officer added.
