Security Stepped up around JNU following Molestation Incident

A day after arrest of four outsiders in connection with molestation of women students in JNU, security has been stepped up in the university campus.

A senior police officer said that policemen were deployed in large numbers outside the university campus to avert any untoward incident and that a case was registered against accused who would be presented in the court.

The four accused were identified as Nitin Kapoor, Ankit Nanda, Amit Chauhan and Gagan Kumar.

Students said that the whole trouble started after these four accused, all in inebriated state, were caught misbehaving with women students and threatening a security guard by putting a gun to his head on the university campus.

“I was going with my friend when a car crossed at high speed. They almost knocked us down and started passing lewd remarks. I reported the matter to one of the guards on duty,” said Vibha Iyer, a PhD student.

According to the students, the four men drove into the south Delhi campus around 3.30 p.m. Sunday and were drinking in their white Hyundai Accent car.

“After the matter was reported to security guards, one of the four men put a gun on the guard’s head saying he was son of a senior police officer,” said Saurabh Gupta, a student at the university.

The students caught hold of the youths and called the police. However, students did not allow police to take the youth outside the campus till late in the evening demanding apologies from them. Police made a baton charge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the students.
