Sangma hopes for ‘Conscience vote’ in prez election

Bhopal. Opposition supported Presidential candidate P A Sangma on Sunday said that he was hopeful of victory in the July 19 election with the help of “conscience vote”, which had previously played a deciding role in 1969.
Sangma was in the Madhya Pradesh capital on Sunday to meet state BJP MLAs and appeal for their votes. I am not saying anything new as a conscience vote had played a decisive role even during the 1969 Presidential election,” Sangma told reporters at the Madhya Pradesh BJP headquarters here.
“I believe in miracles. That is the reason why we all believe in God. We go to church, temples and mosques asking God for those miracles to happen. Unlike Pranab Mukherjee, I believe that miracles do happen.” Flanked by senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Anant Kumar, he took a swipe at his UPA rival and added: “Pranab Mukherjee only believes in numbers.”
Sangma said he was contesting the election because no tribal candidate had become the President yet. “If I am elected, I will not only be the President for tribals, but for the whole country,” he added.
BJP sources here claimed that Sangma would get more than twice the votes that will be polled in favour of Mukherjee from Madhya Pradesh.
Sixty-seven per cent of MLAs and MPs from the state were likely to vote for Sangma, they claimed.
