Police searching for clues of Mumbai bomb blasts

NEW DELHI: One of the biggest clues of the Mumbai serial blasts which took place on Wednesday, the scooter on which the IED was planted has been identified by police.

Scooter used to plant bomb in Zaveri bazar has been traced to Bhagchand Das Jain, a resident of Byculla, Mumbai. The police have recorded his statement.

Jain said, “The police barricaded Khau galli soon after the blast. We were not allowed to enter the area. The next day the whole market was shut. We went to lodge a complaint about our missing scooter. That’s when the police smelt a rat. We’ve owned the Activa for 14 months. When the police showed us the scooter, we saw how badly damaged it was.”

Police suspected that Jain’s scooter was used in the blast, however clams after evaluation of the documents they realised that it was not the scooter used in the blast.

“Police suspect our scooter was used in the blast. And that’s why they started inquiring. When we showed them the documents, they realised it wasn’t the scooter used in the blast. The police say our scooter will be returned to us in a few days,” Jain said.

According to sources there could be a Kolkata link to the blasts and that the Maharashtra Anti Terror Squad (ATS) is in touch with the Kolkata Special Task Force (STF). This came after a suspect believed to be associated with the Indian Mujahideen went missing in the last few days.

Sources also said that the ATS has asked for the details of the passenger lists from Kolkata to Mumbai for 8 days before the blasts. It has also asked for the reservation charts.

Also NIA team visited Ahmedabad on Friday to meet Indian Mujahideen suspect Danish who was arrested by the Crime Branch in connection with the Ahemdabad blast in 2008.

The Ahemdabad crime branch and Gujarat ATS is coordinating with Mumbai ATS with regards to information with Indian Mujahideen modules.

In Mumbai, people living close to a possible safe house of the terrorists are being questioned as the police now believe that a safe house close to the blast locations was used as the assembly point.
