Nitin Gadkari’s term as BJP president ends today

New Delhi: The first term of Nitin Gadkari as BJP president comes to an end on Thursday. The party sources say that despite corruption charges, he will continue to lead the party for now.

Gadkari had recently been in the firing line from his own party members over corruption charges. He was accused by activist-turned politician Arvind Kejriwal of being illegally favoured by Maharashtra government in allocation of farm land. Senior party leaders like Ram Jethmalani, Shatrughan Sinha and Yashwant Sinha opened a frontal attack on Gadkari demanding that he should step down after facing serious corruption charges. The party suspended the senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Ramjethmalani for launching scathing attack on Gadkari.

However, maintaining that he is not a businessman but a social entrepreneur, Gadkari had recently said none of the allegations levelled against him could be proved.

“I am an honest man. I am not scared of anyone. I have not favoured any company during my stint as Maharashtra PWD minister. Media can’t pass any judgement against me,” BJP chief had added.

Party’s former president Rajnath Singh had also made a statement that Gadkari will get a second term despite charges of corruption against the firms promoted by him.
