Nirbhaya Gangrape Case Convict Vinay Sharma Tries To Commit Suicide In Tihar

New Delhi: Vinay Sharma, a convict in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case, allegedly attempted suicide in high security Tihar Jail. He was admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in a critical condition.
According to sources, he consumed pills and tried to hang himself on Wednesday night. He is now out of danger. Sharma, including other five had gang-raped a 23-year-old paramedical student and beat her friend in a running bus on December 16, 2012.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s lawyer AP Singh claimed that it was not a suicide attempt but attempt to murder. “Few days ago, I met him in jail where he complained about torture inside the jail premises,” Singh said. Sharma, Mukesh, Pawan, Akshay Thakur and Ram Singh, along with a juvenile, were accused of gang-raping and assaulting a 23-year-old inside a private bus. The victim and her friend were thrown out of the bus after the crime. In 2013, Ram Singh was found dead in the Tihar Jail. According to the police, Singh had hanged himself.

The juvenile accused in the case was convicted and sentenced to a maximum of three years in a reformation home. He was released from the observation home in December last year. The victim died of grave intestinal injuries on December 29, 2012 at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital where she was airlifted for specialised treatment.
The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. Subsequently, the government had to take several stringent measures.
