It is alright for husband to beat his wife : HC judge
Bangalore: A Karnataka High Court judge has said that it is alright for a husband to beat his wife as long as he takes care of her. Justice Now Women organisations are geared up against his remarks.
The complaint of a 28-year-old woman that her husband beat her regularly came up for hearing in the court of Justice Bhaktavatsala and Justice BS Indrakala.
According to reports, the judge K Bhaktavatsala had observed that it was acceptable for a man to beat his wife if he takes care of her. “Why are you still talking about his beatings? I know you have undergone pain. But this is nothing compared to what you undergo as a woman.” He said.
However, the woman told the bench that she was unwilling to return to her husband.
Justice Bhaktavatsala said his comments were twisted out of context. He said he always supported reconciliation in case of failed marriages.
He has come under severe criticism for his remarks from the Karnataka Women’s Commission and other groups. C Manjula, chairman of the Karnataka Women’s Commission slammed the judge for his stand.
She said, “There are laws to protect women and their rights but if people like him say that a husband beating wife is alright, who will then protect the women?
