Hang Beant killer on March 31: Chandigarh court

NEW DELHI: A Chandigarh court ruled on Tuesday that Babbar Khalsa terrorist Balwant Singh Rajoana should be hanged as scheduled on March 31. The Rajoana was sentenced to death in the 1995 assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

The opposition is beginning build up in some places in Punjab to protest the hanging. Mean while Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has reached New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the issue with President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Rajoana has to be hanged on Saturday (March 31) at 9am in the Patiala jail premises as per the court orders.

The Security had been stepped up across the state ahead of the verdict.Earlier the Patiala superintendent had on Monday moved a petition seeking deferment of Rajoana’s hanging in the court of additional district and sessions judge Shalini Singh Nagpal in Chandigarh.

Rajoana criticized politicians, he say’s “I neither trusted them (Akalis) nor believe them as they have failed to get justice from New Delhi.

These leaders were mum till date, and suddenly, they are speaking for my clemency.”He further added: “All know how they have made money and what their reality is. The Akalis should give away blue turbans and instead don khaki turbans for failing to get justice from New Delhi time and again.”

Beant Singh was largely credited of wiping out terrorism from the state between 1992 and 1995 . He was assassinated by a human bomb; Dilawar Singh on Aug 31, 1995.The mastermind of the assassination was Hawara. Rajoana was the second human bomb to be used in case the first assassin failed. Rajoana had admitted that he alone was responsible for the killing of Beant Singh during the entire trial period.The family members of Beant Singh have also stated that they had forgiven Rajoana and they want to convert his death sentence to life imprisonment.
