Bopaiah Elected Karnataka Assembly Speaker

In spite of strong protests from the opposition Congress and JD-S, BJP’s KG Bopaiah has been elected Karnataka assembly speaker.

Strongly protesting the election process, Congress and JD-S members insisted that the election should be stopped for the day in view of the death of veteran Kannada film superstar Vishnuvardhan earlier in the day. The actor, 59, died of a cardiac arrest in Mysore.

The House, nonetheless, declared Bopaiah as the Speaker amid the shouts and protests.

Congress party’s TB Jayachandra was in race for the rank against Bopaiah. The post lied vacant after resignation of Jagadish Shettar, who joined the cabinet of the chief minster BS Yeddyurappa in November.

Bopaiah after taking over the charge adjourned the 225-member house sine die, a day ahead of the scheduled end to the 10-day session.
