Bar Council of India seeks immediate resolution, forms 7-member delegation to meet judges

New Delhi: After four senior Supreme Court judges came out and spoke about the issues concerning the highest court in the country, the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday said that it has unanimously decided to form a 7-member delegation of the Council who will meet the judges. Confirming the development, Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said that the council wants the matter to be solved at the earliest.

“As far as Memorandum of Procedure is concerned, it must be finalised at the earliest in a proper manner. We will write a letter to the government for the same but is not that big a matter to be brought in public,” said Mishra.

Ever since the unprecedented press conference by Justice J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph, various political parties including the Congress extended their support to the judges.

Mishra while addressing the media on Saturday said that the Bar Council of India requests the political parties and individuals to not politicise the matter.

“We have given an opportunity to Rahul Gandhi and political parties to talk about our judiciary, it is unfortunate. On behalf of Bar Council of India, I request him and other political parties to not politicise the matter,” said Mishra.

While several parties have said that the Centre should not intervene in the matter, Mishra said that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and law minister on Friday said that it was an internal matter of the judiciary and the government will not interfere. “We appreciate the government’s stand,” said Mishra.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held a press conference. SCBA president Vikas Singh said that that the association had called an emergency meeting. Singh said that the issues raised by the judges are of grave concern and must be resolved immediately by SC bar association.

“Another resolution taken was that all PIL matters must be taken by CJI or must be assigned to the collegium of 5 judges. This must be done in order to maintain credibility of Supreme Court,” said Singh adding that the association will send a unanimous resolution to Chief Justice of India.

Singh added that the first meeting of SCBA will be held with the Chief Justice of India. “If he agrees to our views, we will take appointment from the other judges too and fix a meeting with them,” he added.
