Asaram sent to judicial custody for 14 days

New Delhi: The case against Asaram Bapu has become “very strong” based on the progress in investigation of the case, Jodhpur Police said on Monday.

“Our case is very strong and moving in the right direction. More time would be required to complete the probe, and it would be decided at the time of producing Asaram whether to seek more time for police custody or judicial custody”, Jodhpur DPC Ajay Pal Lamba said.

72-year-old Asaram was on Sunday remanded to police custody for a day after being grilled by Jodhpur Police for about four hours. Asked about reports that Asaram was suffering from a neuro disorder, the DCP said, “It has been proved to be a lie. His son can say what he wants to say. We can’t comment on any body’s statement.”

Asaram was arrested past midnight on Saturday from his ashram in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was put through medical checks, including a potency test that came out positive. He was also taken to his Manai Ashram, which is about 30 kms from Jodhpur, where the girl was alleged to have been sexually assaulted.
The 16-year-old girl, who had studied at Asaram’s ashram in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara, stayed in a girls’ hostel there. She had alleged that the guru sexually assaulted her on the pretext of exorcism.
Asaram has denied the charge, and his son had claimed that the girl was “mentally unstable”.
