Madhya Pradesh has a big road network of 68, 000 km. Presently, as many as 18 national high ways, having length of 4676 kms, pass through various cities of the state. They are NH 13, NH 7,NH 12, NH 12 A, NH 25, NH 25, NH 27,NH 59, NH 69, NH 75, NH 75 Ext, NH 76, NH 78,NH 79, NH 86 Ext, NH 86 , NH 92 etc. Similarly, the total length of state highways is 7459 kms, followed by 25033 kms of rural roads and 31660 kms of Major District Roads.

Government is concerned about the development of roads and has taken certain steps to upgrade them. Its major emphasis is to constructed quality roads which lasts for long time and saves expenditure.

Under Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana, as many as 3360 roads measuring 15, 426 kms have been constructed. At present, 5658 villages have direct connectivity with main roads. The Public Works department has constructed and upgraded 15, 656 km roads. Further, 14, 700 kms road works would be undertaken in the state.

For road construction, government has switched over to the latest technology available for bituminous work. Besides, state has introduced modern specifications like wet mix macadam, asphaltic concrete and dense bituminous macadam for road construction. Now Maximum parts of the state are having good roads and work is on to construct new roads in other regions.

The improvement in road quality can be judged from the fact that freight movement by road has increased from 11 percent to 60 percent and the passenger movement from 26 percent to eighty percent.
