Commonwealth Games: Wrestlers Sushil Kumar, Rahul Aware win a gold each; India’s medal tally reaches 31

Gold Coast: Sushil Kumar and Rahul Aware won gold medals in 74kg and 57 kg men’s freestyle wrestling categories respectively at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Thursday. Three athletes Babita Kumari (women’s 53 kg freestyle), Tejaswini Sawant (women’s 50m prone shooting) and Seema Punia (women’s discus throw) won silver.
Two athletes won bronze – Navjeet Dhillon (women’s discus throw) and Kiran (women’s 76kg). So far, third-placed India have won 31 medals – 14 gold, seven silver and 10 bronze.
Meanwhile, Indian women’s hockey team lost to Australia 0-1 in the semifinal and will play England for bronze medal.
Sushil Kumar defeated South Africa’s Johannes Botha with consummate ease to win the gold while Rahul Aware beat Canada’s Steven Takahashi in men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling finalto finish first. Rahul’s medal was India’s first wrestling gold medal in the CWG 2018.
Star shuttler Saina Nehwal also progressed to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles badminton event due to her opponent retiring. Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty too made the last eight of the men’s doubles event with a straight games win over Mauritius’ Aatish Lubah and Christopher Jean Paul.
