UN Chief Reaches Afghanistan for Talk with Karzai

UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon has reached Afghanistan capital city Kabul for holding talks with President Hamid Karzai following his withdrawal of his lone rival in a run-off election, said a UN statement.

Referring a recent deadly strike by militants on a UN guesthouse, the statement said: “Secretary General Ban has now arrived in-country to express his solidarity with the men and women of the United Nations following last week’s tragic events.”

The statement added that he would be meeting President Karzai in the course of the day as well as with Dr Abdullah.
Ban’s visit comes a day after former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah announced that he would not participate in a presidential election run-off which is scheduled to take place on November 7, citing fears of fraud.
