Fierce firefight erupts in Damascus

DAMASCUS: One of the fiercest firefights erupts in the year long Syrian uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.The firefigts shattered the night calm in the al-Mezze districtand left two terrorist and one civilian dead says Syria’s official News agency SANA.

One resident told Reuters news agency there was “fighting near Hamada supermarket and the sound of explosions there and elsewhere in the neighbourhood”.

“These clashes were the most violent and the closest to the security force headquarters in Damascus since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution,” said Rami Abdul Rahman who runs a British-based Syrian Observatory of Human rights.

Opposition activist Amer al-Sadeq told the BBC’s World Today programme that he has spoken to one of the contacts in Al Mezze who repoted 4 blasts within 4 minutes which followed by heavy gunfire.

“I heard the sound of several explosions. They could be tanks firing their guns or rebels using dynamite to try and slow down their advance,” Tareq, one of the residents said.

A team of experts send by UN and Arab leauge which includes Kofi Annan reaches here discuss ceasefire and monitoring plans, says AFP news agency reports.

Assad, who has received crucial backing from both Russia and China on the U.N.-Security Council, has questioned the worth of such a mission.

The latest incident follows bomb blasts in Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo over the weekend.
