Under Construction Bridge Collapses; 17 Killed, Six Injured, Many Feared Trapped

An under construction bridge on the Kota-Udaipur by-pass on the Chambal River in Rajasthan collapsed on Thursday, killing nearly 17 people and injuring six others, said an official.

According to the district administration, as many as 50 people are feared trapped in the debris.

“We have till now been able to recover four bodies. Chances of more dead under the debris are high,” said a district administration official.

“We have launched relief operations and have sought the army’s help,” the official said.

He said that the reasons leading to the collapse of the 50-metre bridge were being probed.

Reports said quoting eyewitnesses that the incident took place at around 1745 hrs IST.

The bridge collapsed all of a sudden when construction work was on and so left as many as 250 workers at the site trapped under debris.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced a compensation of Rs 200,000 to the next of kin of each of those killed, Rs 100,000 to each of the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to the other injured.
