1 killed, 15 injured in twin quakes in Chinese province

Beijing: A nine-year-old boy was killed and 15 people injured on Saturday when two moderate earthquakes struck China’s southwestern Yunnan Province.
Eight persons were injured in the 5.9-magnitude quake that hit the Jinggu County, Pu’er City, at 6:20 p.m.

Seven persons were injured after a 5.8-magnitude quake struck the same region early in the morning. The tremor struck at 2:43 a.m. at Jinggu County, Pu’er City.
Zhang Jianguo, of Yunnan Disaster Prevention Research Institute, believed the quake was a strong aftershock of an earlier one on October 7 that killed one person and injured over 300.

Epicenters of the two quakes were 10 kilometers apart, Xinhua reported.

“After the previous quake, people at the zone were evacuated,” he said, adding that the aftershock would not result in heavy casualties. The tremor lasted for less than one minute.
