Sonia recovering in intensive care

NEW DELHI: Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi recovering in the intensive care unit after surgery said Congress sources.

The party issued a brief statement that Sonia, 64, underwent surgery yesterday and that the surgeon had indicated the operation was successful. Children Rahul and Priyanka and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with her, the statement by Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said.

It did not disclose what the surgery was for or the name of the hospital where the Congress president is admitted.

“This is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment. Her family requests that her privacy be respected,” said Dwivedi.

While Congress leaders expressed confidence that Sonia would be back in a month to lead the party, there was gloom at the 24 Akbar Road headquarters.

A senior leader thought to be close to Sonia said: “We were definitely taken aback yesterday as most of us were not aware of her illness. What confounded the confusion were all kinds of speculation about her health and the sudden decision to fly abroad. But the impression we are getting today is very encouraging. She will be back to guide us soon.”

But Congress MPs said the mention of a US hospital, Sloan-Kettering that treats cancer patients, saddened workers. “I have received over 100 calls from my constituency since yesterday,” one young MP said.
