Caste Issue: No relief to Ajit Jogi from HC

High Court of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur on Wednesday has rejected the plea of state’s former chief minister and Janta Congress Chhattisgarh Supremo Ajit Jogi for permitting him to abstain from appearing before a high-power committee, which is probing his caste.

Jogi now will have to appear before the High Power Committee on May 30. The special vacation court of Justice Sharat Kumar Gupta on Wednesday had fixed the date for next hearing as June 17, 2019.

Jogi had abstained from appearing before the high-power committee on May 10 on health grounds. The committee gave June 30 as the next date for hisn appearance. But Jogi moved the high court against the order.

Notable, the Chhattisgarh High Court had earlier in 2018 had ruled that the decision of previous high-power committee about cancellation of Jogi’s caste certificate was wrong and nullified its findings.

It further ordered the state government to constitute a new committee on deciding about Jogi’s caste. Statements and claims of Jogi should also be incorporated in it, the court ruled.

Following the ruling after the orders were also upheld by the Supreme Court, the then BJP government headed by Raman Singh formed a new high-power committee, which is now probing Jogi’s caste and is also trying to incorporate the former chief minister’s statement.
